What this Amazon fee calculator is for
This page is for UK sellers who want to know whether an Amazon sale still makes sense after referral fees, selling plan costs and the boring but real costs of stock, postage and packaging. It is not trying to be the full Amazon FBA revenue calculator. The official Seller Central calculator is still the best place for exact ASIN-level fulfilment fees, storage assumptions and Amazon programme adjustments. This calculator is deliberately lighter: it helps you test a price before you list, accept an offer, order stock, or decide whether the Individual or Professional plan is the better fit.
Amazon is different from eBay because the headline seller fee is usually a category referral fee rather than a final value fee plus multiple marketplace charges. But the simple headline can still hide margin problems. The referral fee is charged on the total sales price, including delivery or gift wrapping charges paid by the buyer. If you charge GBP 24.99 for an item and GBP 2.99 delivery, the fee base is not just GBP 24.99. It is GBP 27.98.
How Amazon UK selling plans work
Amazon UK has two main selling plans. The Individual plan costs GBP 0.75 per item sold, excluding VAT, plus referral fees. The Professional plan costs GBP 25 per month, excluding VAT, plus referral fees. Amazon’s own guidance says the Individual plan may suit sellers with fewer than 35 items a month, while Professional makes more sense above that level or where you need advertising, bulk listing tools, reporting, APIs, restricted-category applications, or top placement on product detail pages.
The break-even calculation is simple but useful. GBP 25 divided by GBP 0.75 is 33.33, so by about 34 paid units a month the Professional subscription can be cheaper than the Individual per-item fee. That does not mean every seller should upgrade immediately. If you sell irregularly, are still testing products, or only list a few personal items, a fixed monthly charge can be wasteful. If you are building an actual Amazon business, the Professional plan is often part of the operating setup rather than a per-item decision.
Referral fee categories and 2026 changes
Amazon’s referral fee schedule is category-specific. Many categories are around 15%, but the current UK table includes important exceptions. Computers and consumer electronics are 7%. Books, music, video and DVD are 15% with no minimum referral fee shown in the public schedule. Amazon device accessories are much higher at 45%. Jewellery and watches use tiered rates, so the first part of the price is charged at one percentage and the amount above the threshold is charged at a lower percentage.
The 2026 updates are especially relevant for lower-priced items. Amazon says Clothing and Accessories referral fees were reduced from 8% to 5% for items at or below GBP 15, and from 15% to 10% for items between GBP 15 and GBP 20. Amazon also lists lower-price changes for Home Products, Pet Clothing and Food, Grocery and Gourmet, and Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements. This calculator includes those practical fee profiles because a flat 15% assumption can badly overstate costs on some low-price listings and understate costs in specialist categories.
Seller decision checklist
- Are you seller-fulfilled? Enter your real postage and packaging costs.
- Are you using FBA? Use this page for referral fees, then compare against the Amazon FBA Calculator or Seller Central revenue calculator.
- Are you selling fewer than 35 units a month? Compare Individual against Professional before adding a fixed subscription to every product.
- Is the item low-price clothing, grocery, pet food or home goods? Choose the specific reduced-fee category rather than a generic 15% rate.
- Do you need to know the tax on the profit? Use the Selling Online Tax Calculator after the fee check.
Worked example: a seller-fulfilled product
Imagine you sell a small home product for GBP 24.99 and charge GBP 2.99 delivery. The buyer pays GBP 27.98. If the item falls into Amazon’s Home Products category, the calculator applies 8% to the first GBP 20 and 15% above that. You then add the selling plan cost: either GBP 0.75 for the Individual plan, or a monthly Professional subscription spread across your expected units. Finally, you subtract your stock cost, postage, packaging and any advertising cost per sale.
This is where Amazon sellers often spot the problem. A product can look profitable at the gross selling price, but lose its shine once referral fees and shipping are included. If your margin is thin, you might need a higher price, cheaper fulfilment, a bundle, a different supplier, or a different marketplace. The point of the calculator is not just to tell you the fee. It is to stop a bad buying decision before you have boxes of stock in the hallway.
What this calculator does not cover
It does not calculate FBA fulfilment fees, monthly storage, aged inventory, low-inventory-level fees, returns processing, removals, prep, labelling, inbound placement, Pan-European FBA, EFN, Multi-Channel Fulfilment, Subscribe & Save, Lightning Deals, vouchers, Brand Registry incentives, refunds, fee credits, chargebacks, currency conversion, or every specialist fee in Seller Central. Those are real costs, but they need product dimensions, product weight, fulfilment programme and account-level context.
It also does not decide whether HMRC treats your Amazon activity as trading, or calculate Income Tax, National Insurance, Corporation Tax or VAT on your sales. Selling personal possessions occasionally is not the same as buying goods to resell for profit. If the Amazon activity is a business, keep proper sales and expense records and use the Selling Online Tax Calculator, VAT Calculator or UK Import Tax Calculator for the next layer of planning.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon charge UK sellers?
Amazon UK charges a selling plan fee plus category referral fees. The Individual plan is GBP 0.75 per item sold, while the Professional plan is GBP 25 per month excluding VAT. Referral fees vary by category and are usually calculated on the total price paid by the buyer.
Are Amazon referral fees charged on postage?
Amazon says referral fees are calculated on the total sales price, including item price and delivery or gift-wrapping charges paid by the buyer.
Does this calculator include FBA fees?
This page focuses on Amazon selling plan, referral and seller-fulfilled profit estimates. FBA fulfilment, storage and size-tier fees are better handled by a dedicated Amazon FBA calculator or Amazon Seller Central revenue calculator.
Does this calculator tell me how much tax I owe on Amazon sales?
No. It estimates Amazon platform fees and profit before tax. UK tax depends on whether you are trading, your wider income, expenses, VAT registration and business structure.
